Shein and Temu, prominent players in the fast fashion industry, are under scrutiny following a South Korean analysis revealing toxic substances in their products. Inspections of 144 items showed that many exceeded legal limits for harmful chemicals, raising concerns about consumer safety. Notably, Shein's shoes contained phthalates at levels 229 times higher than allowed, while Temu's sandals had lead levels 11 times above the limit.

This is not the first instance of such findings; previous studies, including one by Greenpeace, have also highlighted safety issues with fast fashion items. The South Korean authorities emphasized the need for consumers to be cautious, particularly with products that come into direct contact with the body.

In response, both companies have stated they are investigating the findings and are committed to improving their safety protocols. They assert that they conduct regular safety tests to ensure compliance with regulations.
