NASA to Decide on Boeing's Starliner or SpaceX's Crew Dragon for Astronauts' Return
NASA is set to announce a decision regarding the return of astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, who have been aboard Boeing's Starliner for over ten weeks. The spacecraft has faced multiple issues, including helium leaks and propulsion failures, raising concerns about its reliability. Boeing maintains that the Starliner can safely return to Earth, with a potential landing date of September 2.
Alternatively, NASA may opt for a rescue mission using SpaceX's Crew Dragon, which could launch as early as September 24. If this plan is chosen, the Starliner would return empty on September 6, while Crew Dragon would bring the astronauts back in February 2025. The decision is complicated by political implications for Boeing's future missions.
Despite the challenges, Wilmore and Williams are prepared for an extended stay in space, having received supplies and training for contingencies, including the possibility of spending Christmas aboard the International Space Station.
