Vehicle Registration Law: How the Fine System Will Work

The new Vehicle Registration Law (Law N. 7447) will establish a unified system for collecting traffic fines, as announced by Félix Jiménez, director of the National Traffic and Road Safety Agency (ANTSV). Under this system, fines incurred in municipalities different from a driver's registered location will be recorded and must be paid when renewing their license.
Jiménez emphasized that this law aims to ensure effective fine collection, addressing current loopholes that allow drivers to renew credentials without settling outstanding fines. The system will utilize radar and cameras for real-time monitoring of traffic violations.
Additionally, the fines collected will be shared between the municipality where the infraction occurred and the driver's registered municipality, with a larger portion going to the municipality of the violation. The law is not yet fully implemented in all municipalities due to ongoing debates regarding the fine amounts.
